Item #: Purple Finish Circular Saws
Once a saw has been heat treated to achieve sufficient hardness in the plate it’s tempered in a lower temperature oven to carefully control that hardness, to make sure that the hardness is uniform throughout the saw, and to add toughness to the saw. All Simonds small diameter saws, regardless of the eventual finish, are carefully tempered in house to get optimum results and uniformity. Our purple finish saws go through all the same steps as our silver saws but after finish grinding they go through an additional tempering process at a moderate temperature to help stress-relieve the steel. This purple finish saws is similar to the gold saw in the way it’s handled, but the soak time in the final temper is a bit longer and at a bit higher temperature than the gold saw. The preference between gold and purple is very much at the preference of the saws doctor, some filers have strong preferences, some find the difference is very small. Like the gold finish saws the change this makes from silver plate is subtle, and shows up in the way a saw holds level and tension, and in the uniform way it responds to the hammer and stretcher roll.
